We haven't had many opportunities for herding since moving here from Indiana in 2008. We were very excited when CC of NH held a Herding Instinct Certification test. Four collies were loaded up, clown car style and we trekked down to rural MA for testing in chilling 40 degree rain. A huge thank you to the tester for coming up from CT and to the farm owner for providing a venue and stock. All four of our dogs passed. Eve and Rip were the rock stars showing strong instinct and even changing direction to balance off the geese. Jade took a minute to turn on...you could see her mind working... "But mom, I'm not allowed to chase the chickens at home." With a little encouragement she turned on. Tyson was the most unsure. At only a year, he was distracted by all the smells of the farm, but did show instinct and tried to move the geese and keep them together. I think if he was a little older and/or had a little more work under his belt, he would have been much more confident and shown stronger instinct. We will have to see how the next 6 months go....maybe some ducks and a little herding ring are in order here at Gateside.
